Ep. 1 Explained Like I’m 5: Dryer Cleaning

The dryer heats the air and turns on a blower. That blower pulls the hot air across the clothes and pushes it out the back. The air goes through the vents in your wall to the outside.

Air flows from the heater, across the clothes, through the blower, out the dryer, through the venting, to the outside.

Lint falls off the clothes and blows out with the air. Some of that lint sticks to the vent. It can slow down the air. Some of that air and lint poofs out into the dryer itself. A bunch of it lands around the heater.

Lint builds up slowly in a good vent, but once it gets restricted it accelerates the rate of buildup.

If a lots of lint builds up around the heater and around the inside of the dryer it can catch fire. You can’t reach this lint unless you take the dryer all the way apart. Even if you clean the vent the lint inside the dryer is still there.

Lint is fire fuel. Get rid of it if it’s there, but a good venting setup can prevent it from building up in the first place!
